our department holds a management conference to present
and discuss patients admitted to our inpatient service as well
as challenging cases from the clinics and the community. Every
2 months our program also hosts the Miami Society of
Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery meeting, where the first
year residents present their most interesting cases.
A major goal of our program is to train outstanding clinicians;
however, residents are also expected and encouraged
to engage in academic activities. Each resident chooses a
pathway in clinical research, basic science research, or a specific
clinical focus, and is required to complete a project or
series of scholarly activities by the end of the third year. Our
well-rounded experience is further enhanced through resident
involvement in various philanthropic efforts. Some of
these opportunities including a monthly dermatology clinic
at the Camillus House center for the homeless, mission trips
to the ‘Skin Clinic’ in Haiti (developed by 2 recent graduates),
skin cancer screenings at approximately 10 community
health fairs in South Florida, and the department-run Sun-
Smart 5k race to raise melanoma awareness.
