Founded in 1956, the University of Miami Department of
Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery has a storied past
and prides itself on clinical excellence and innovative
contributions to the field of dermatology. With 21 full-time
faculty members (13 of whom practice clinical dermatology)
and 11 additional dermatologists serving as part-time clinical
faculty, our department is one of the busiest in the country.
Our various clinical services care for approximately 60,000
patients annually. Additionally, with 10 laboratory-based researchers
and active clinical research efforts, our department
is consistently among the top 25 National Institutes of Health–
supported dermatology departments.
Residency Program
The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital dermatology
residency program is among the largest in the country;
currently training a total of 24 residents including 3 MD/PhD
residents completing a 4-year track. Despite the large size our
residents are a close-knit group, who spend a great deal of
time together during the workday but also like to enjoy all that
South Florida has to offer.
Our residents rotate through various clinical sites comprising
of Jackson Memorial Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital
(Miami-Dade county hospitals), University of Miami Hospital
and Clinics, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (university
hospitals), Miami VA Healthcare Systems (federal
hospital), and Mount Sinai Medical Center (private hospital).
Various subspecialty clinics at these sites (Table 1) offer our
residents exposure to experts in their respective disciplines.
Residents also rotate through our unique inpatient dermatology
service, which allows them the opportunity to care for
patients with complex dermatologic conditions in an inpatient
setting as the primary admitting team.
In addition to our supportive faculty, the residents also benefit
from the contributions of over 140 voluntary faculty members
affiliated with the department, many of whom attend in the
county and VA Hospital clinics and provide didactic lectures.
Our broad-spectrum exposure, along with Miami’s proximity
to South America and the Caribbean, provides a rich clinical
experience with remarkable diversity in patient population
and the opportunity to treat rare tropical diseases.
Resident education is further augmented through daily didactics,
which include book chapter reviews, Kodachromes, and
