The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)
Department of Dermatology Training Program was
established in July 2013 in Jackson, Mississippi. It is
a three-year program preceded by broad-based training at an
AGME-approved program for a minimum of one year. Currently,
two residents matriculate into the program each year.
The program takes pride in its substantial growth during its inaugural
year. Eight core academic faculty members provide
expertise spanning clinical dermatology including general
and complex medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology,
dermatopathology, skin oncology and dermatologic surgery,
cutaneous lymphoma, occupational dermatology/patch testing,
and inpatient consultative dermatology. A high faculty to
resident ratio provides substantial learning opportunities from
a faculty dedicated to the success of each trainee.
The only academic dermatology program in the state of Mississippi,
UMMC residents see a large and diverse patient
population. During all three years, residents provide care in
one of four busy clinical facilities and provide inpatient consulting
to the only academic medical center in Mississippi.
Residents benefit from a weekly continuity clinic supervised
by volunteer affiliate faculty who maintain private practices
in Jackson, Mississippi area. Patients are scheduled for
the residents who develop meaningful relationships as they
monitor response to therapeutic interventions over long periods
of time. As residents master the knowledge base of
dermatology and develop increased technical skill they are afforded more responsibility. Third-year dermatology residents
may design a four-week elective to meet their personal
interests and professional goals.
Clinical experience is balanced with a strong foundation in
dermatology through a variety of weekly interactive educational
sessions including a Bolognia textbook reading club,
didactic lectures, “Kodachromeâ€-style conferences, dermatopathology
conferences, and journal club. Grand Rounds
and Professors Rounds occur monthly and permit an in depth
discussion of patients with complex dermatologic problems.
