Beyond Single Target Topicals: Rethinking Atopic Dermatitis Management

Have you read this article from the JDD?

Managing atopic dermatitis remains a complex clinical challenge, particularly when standard single-target topical agents leave patients trapped in a cycle of persistent flares, xerosis, and pruritus. While topical therapies stay central to treatment strategies across all severity levels, addressing only individual symptoms often fails to control the broader underlying disease continuum.

A recent narrative review published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology synthesized literature from January 2015 through July 2025 to evaluate how current and emerging topical therapies align with the complex pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis. The analysis examines the critical interplay between immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier breakdown, persistent itch, and Staphylococcus aureus colonization.

The review highlights a growing shift toward therapies capable of addressing multiple disease pathways simultaneously. Emerging evidence highlights novel botanical formulations, such as zabalafin (9.5%) hydrogel, which show potential in targeting inflammation, pruritus, microbial dysbiosis, and barrier failure concurrently.

Discover how these multi-target topical approaches may help bridge longstanding gaps in outpatient eczema care and reshape long-term patient outcomes. Read the full study in the latest issue of the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
