From the Vault: Uncovering the Broader Systemic and Cardiovascular Benefits of Shingles Immunization

While dermatologists routinely counsel patients on preventing the painful cutaneous and neurological sequelae of herpes zoster, the systemic risks associated with viral reactivation, particularly elevated cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, are often overlooked in clinical practice.

We are pulling a study from the JDD Vault titled Recombinant Zoster Vaccine Reduces 3-Year Cardiovascular Risk: Insights From a Multi-Centered Database that explores the non-dermatologic benefits of shingles immunization. Utilizing the national TriNetX database, researchers performed a propensity-score matched cohort analysis to evaluate whether receiving two doses of the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) alters long-term outcomes, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and overall mortality.

The findings offer compelling evidence regarding systemic protection, revealing a statistically significant reduction in 3-year myocardial infarction and all-cause mortality among RZV recipients compared to unvaccinated controls, as well as distinct survival advantages when compared to live zoster vaccination. As key healthcare providers discussing VZV prevention, dermatologists are uniquely positioned to recognize how routine immunization offers far-reaching health benefits well beyond the skin.
