The Nova Southeastern University, Health Professions Division,
College of Osteopathic Medicine in conjunction with Broward General Medical Center (NSU-COM/BGMC) Dermatology
Residency Training Program is an Osteopathic program which was founded in 1993 and has produced a total of 34 graduates
to date (Figure 1). It is a three-year training program accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). There are currently
nine residents in total.
The residents have exposure to a variety of pathology and challenging cases by participating in the care of large numbers of patients seen in various facilities including the sponsoring
county hospital, Broward General Medical Center, Specialty Care Clinic at the Broward Health Center for Adult and Pediatric
Dermatology, Nova Southeastern University's Sanford Ziff Health Center, and other office clinic settings. The residents attend
weekly Grand Rounds at Cedar's Medical Center/University
of Miami in conjunction with rotating for one week every ninth week at Cedar's Medical Center, and participate in the weekly Bullous Disease Clinic at Nova Southeastern University as well as weekly dermatopathology lectures and histopathology
slide reviews. On a monthly basis, the NSU-COM/BGMC residents attend a formal journal club meeting under the supervision
of program director Dr. Skopit.
Additional rotations include Mohs surgery, a nail disorder clinic,
dermoscopy and confocal microscopy, radiation-oncology, and pediatric dermatology (Table 1). The residents are responsible
for delivering monthly lectures on various dermatology topics to students, interns and residents of other specialties at Broward General Medical Center and Nova Southeastern University.
Yearly, the residents serve the public by offering skin cancer screening health fairs in conjunction with the American Cancer Society at Broward General Medical Center. Annually, the NSU-COM/BGMC residents host and run a grand rounds setting on behalf of the Broward Dermatology Society. Over the years, many NSU-COM/BGMC residents have won the coveted
Koprince award, which is presented to the top lecture presentation
from an Osteopathic Dermatology
Residency Program at the annual American
Osteopathic
College of Dermatology meeting.
Several residents
have not only had arti-
cles published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (JAOCD), but also numerous other scientific journals including the JAAD and Archives of Dermatology. For the past five years, residents have submitted an educational poster for display at the annual American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) meeting (Table 2).
