Painless™ PDT vs. Conventional PDT: A Quick Look at Patient Comfort in AK Treatment

Actinic keratosis (AK) [https://jddonline.com/project-atlas/inclusive-derm/actinic-keratosis/] is one of the most common conditions treated by dermatologists, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) remains a mainstay. But for many patients, the burning or stinging sensation during treatment is a major deterrent. Enter Painless™ PDT—a modified approach designed to reduce discomfort without compromising efficacy.

In this May JDD mini review, “The Comparison Between Conventional Photodynamic Therapy and ‘Painless’™ Photodynamic Therapy in the Treatment of Actinic Keratosis”, the authors summarize studies comparing these two approaches. While conventional PDT uses an occlusion period followed by a focused light source—often triggering pain—Painless™ PDT begins light exposure immediately after application of the photosensitizer, using a continuous low-irradiance light over a longer period.

The result? Markedly lower levels of patient discomfort with similar clinical clearance rates in many studies. This review suggests that Painless™ PDT can be an effective alternative, particularly for patients with lower pain tolerance or large treatment areas.

As patient-centered care becomes increasingly prioritized, dermatologists should consider both treatment efficacy and experience. This mini review offers a quick refresher on a growing option for managing AK comfortably.
