Lab to Label training boosts dermatology resident confidence in OTC product counseling
Have you read this article from the upcoming April issue of JDD? An IRB approved study assessed topical vehicle training among dermatology residents and measured the effect of a targeted educational intervention delivered at the Lab to Label conference. The program combined didactic sessions, multidisciplinary panels, and hands on product evaluation to cover skin barrier science, formulation basics, sunscreen and acne topicals, FDA considerations, and practical counseling for OTC and cosmeceutical products. Of 22 residents present, 17 completed pre and post surveys; most reported little prior formal training and showed large, statistically significant gains in objective knowledge and in comfort and confidence discussing topical vehicles and recommending OTC products.
The work is a small, regional study relying on self reported measures, yet it highlights a common training gap and offers a reproducible model for improving resident readiness to advise patients about topical formulations, sunscreens, and vehicle selection.
