Time for a Global Standard? Rethinking Topical Corticosteroid Classification

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are a mainstay in dermatology, used to treat a wide range of skin conditions. While effective and generally well-tolerated, confusion persists when it comes to understanding their potencies. That’s because there’s no universal classification—each country uses its own system.

This review explores the current landscape of TCS potency classifications and calls for a more consistent, global approach. By aligning what we already know with a clearer, unified framework, we can reduce confusion and improve clinical communication across borders.

A universal system could benefit both patients and providers, making it easier to choose the right treatment, at the right strength, no matter where you are.
