Did you miss it?

By 2044, people with skin of color (SOC) will make up the majority of the U.S. population—but dermatology still lags behind in addressing their unique needs. A new 10-year study from the University of Southern California dives into what really brings patients of color into the dermatology clinic—and the results are both eye-opening and essential for shaping future care.

Analyzing over 4,500 outpatient visits from 2009 to 2019, researchers found the most common reasons patients with SOC sought care were for:

  • Skin checks
  • Growths or bumps
  • Rashes
  • Acne
  • Discoloration

When it came to diagnoses, benign neoplasms topped the list, followed by dermatitis, acne, eczema/xerosis, and dyspigmentation. Unsurprisingly, patterns varied based on race/ethnicity, gender, and age, emphasizing the need for personalized, culturally competent care.

Bottom line: Understanding what patients with SOC are actually seeking helps clinicians deliver care that’s more relevant, respectful, and effective.

It’s not just about knowing the top diagnoses—it’s about seeing the patient, not just the skin.
