Seborrheic Dermatitis on TikTok: Who’s Driving the Conversation?
Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common yet complex inflammatory skin condition, and patients are increasingly turning to social media for guidance. But how reliable is the information they’re getting? A new analysis examines SD-related content on TikTok, comparing the accuracy of videos made by healthcare professionals (HCPs) vs. non-HCPs.
After reviewing hundreds of videos, researchers found that while most content was accurate, misinformation persisted—primarily from non-HCPs. Notably, dermatologist-created videos were the most popular and highly engaged with, reinforcing the impact of expert-driven content. However, gaps remain, particularly in discussions around cradle cap and the misconception between dandruff and dry scalp.
With TikTok playing a growing role in patient education, should more dermatologists be stepping in to combat misinformation?
