Trichoscopy in Skin of Color: Uncovering Overlapping Alopecia

Trichoscopy is a critical tool in diagnosing hair disorders, but findings can vary in skin of color, requiring a tailored approach to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment. A new case series highlights three cases of concurrent lichen planopilaris (LPP) and female androgenic alopecia (FAGA) – a combination that could be missed without thorough scalp examination.

Dermoscopy revealed classic FAGA signs in the temporal scalp, but additional scarring alopecia features in the frontal scalp, prompting targeted biopsies that confirmed overlapping pathology. The findings reinforce the importance of full scalp assessment and strategic biopsy sampling to guide treatment.
