A New Outreach Program Demonstrates How Targeted Education Can Transform Access To Dermatologic Care

Since its launch in 2020, DermmunityTM, a community service program run by the USC Department of Dermatology, has quietly been making waves in Los Angeles’s underserved neighborhoods. Designed to bring dermatologic education directly to those who need it most, the program has reached hundreds of residents over the past four years with lectures led by faculty and trainees covering everything from basic skin health to the steps of finding and scheduling a dermatologist appointment.

A recent study evaluating Dermmunity’s impact reveals that participants not only found the sessions highly valuable but also left with a clearer understanding of when and how to seek professional skin care. Many attendees had experienced skin, hair, or nail concerns yet had never consulted their primary care provider, let alone a specialist. After engaging with Dermmunity’s team, most reported feeling confident about recognizing warning signs and navigating the often-daunting process of making a dermatology appointment.

While the study acknowledges limitations, such as a modest sample size and the potential for non-response bias, the overarching message is clear: community-based education can play a pivotal role in closing gaps to care and advancing health equity. For practicing dermatologists, these findings underscore an opportunity to support or replicate similar outreach efforts, extending our expertise beyond clinic walls.

Discover the full details of Dermmunity’s outcomes and consider how your practice might participate in or inspire comparable programs.
