Livedo reticularis presents as reticulated or mottled red, violaceous, brown, or hyperpigmented patches. It is often seen on the lower extremities but can involve the upper extremities and trunk. The differential diagnosis should include erythema ab igne, polyarteritis nodosa, and macular arteritis.
The pattern of livedo reticularis is often mistaken for erythema ab igne. Interestingly livedo reticularis may worsen with cold exposure, whereas erythema ab igne thrives from excess heat.
