A dermatofibroma typically presents as a firm papule that is darker than the surrounding skin. Notice here that the dermatofibromas in lighter skin tones are pink to light brown. As the skin tone gets darker the dermatofibroma darkens to a deep brown and sometimes black. The central area may present with a lighter scar that can also “dimple” when the edges of the lesion are squeezed. Dermatoscopically, the central white scar can appear star-shaped or retiform, which can help distinguish this neoplasm from other more concerning types, such as melanoma.
