Check out one of Dr. Daly’s JDD articles: Telogen Effluvium With Dysesthesia (TED) Has Lower B12 Levels and May Respond to B12 Supplementation Telogen Effluvium with Dysesthesia (TED) is a distinct form of hair shedding marked by severe scalp sensations – burning, itching, soreness or formication – without obvious inflammation. In nine patients, elevated methylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels pointed to functional B12 deficiency despite normal serum B12, implicating C-fiber dysfunction in both shedding and dysesthesia. Targeted B12 supplementation (especially when levels fall below 550 pg/mL or functional markers are abnormal) reversed hair loss and relieved scalp symptoms. These results advocate for routine B12 evaluation and treatment in patients presenting with TED.
