Melasma affects people worldwide, particularly women and individuals with darker skin tones. But how well do clinical trials reflect this diversity? This JDD article analyzed 19 melasma trials from ClinicalTrials.gov, involving 614 participants, to evaluate gender, racial, and skin tone representation.

The findings reveal promising inclusivity: nearly 97% of participants were women, with Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Black, and White patients well-represented. Fitzpatrick skin types III and IV made up over 75% of the study population.

This push toward diverse representation marks a positive trend in dermatology research. Read the full article to learn how inclusive trials are shaping the future of melasma treatment and beyond.
