From the Vault: Innate Error Immunities of the Th17 Immune Pathway Associated With Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis: A Systematic Review

By March 10, 2026No Comments

Have you read this JDD review on Th17 pathway defects and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis?

We pulled this one from the JDD vault – a must read article that dates back to December 2023. This article features a systematic review that searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science to identify primary studies evaluating innate error immunities of the Th17 response in chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis.

After screening, 18 studies were included, with five murine studies and 13 human reports. The authors summarize case reports that identify mutations in IL-17F, IL-17RA, IL-17RC, and ACT1, and they note that mouse models support roles for IL-17A and IL-17F in disease susceptibility. The report focuses on genetic and experimental evidence without asserting causation, and it is limited by small study numbers and heterogeneity in study designs.

For practicing dermatology clinicians and dermatology HCPs, the review highlights candidate genes and experimental findings to consider when evaluating refractory mucocutaneous candidiasis and when discussing referrals for immunology or genetic evaluation. Read the full JDD review for study details, mutation summaries, and practical implications for clinical assessment.
