Microbiome Matters: Can Your Moisturizer Restore Balance?

The skin microbiome is more than just a trendy buzzword – it is a critical player in the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis and sensitive skin. Emerging research suggests that modulating bacterial communities through skincare products could be a game-changing approach to managing these conditions.

A recent open-label study put this concept to the test, evaluating a moisturizer formulated with colloidal oatmeal, Ophiopogon japonicus root extract (AD-Resyl®), and a patented filaggrin protein byproduct. After just 21 days of twice-daily use, bacterial species richness significantly increased in 10 of 12 participants – without triggering dysbiosis. These findings reinforce the potential of targeted skincare to support both the skin barrier and microbial balance.

Could microbiome-friendly moisturizers be the next frontier in atopic dermatitis management?
