JDD:What do you think of the role of JDD within the realm of dermatological literature—does it fill a gap?
Dr.Hsiung:Definitely, when Dr. Robins started the JDD 10 years ago, it was a stroke of genius to combine dermatology and technical advances in medicine. The element that is always driving our field is the advancement of devices and medications and how we use those medications. So having a journal that enhances the manner in which we treat our patients is really important and impactful. The benefit of having a contemporary journal that is dedicated to what is current and evolving is to keep us up-to-date with the medications and treatments we should have in our arsenals. More so than some other journals, the JDD looks to publish things that impact the day-to-day practice of dermatologists.
JDD:How have you seen JDD grow over the past decade? Do you feel that the articles in the Journal have improved? Have you seen an increase in the quality of articles over the years?
Dr. Hsiung:Since I have been on the review board for the past 6 years, I have definitely noticed an improvement in the quality of submissions and increase in the number of submissions. The name JDD is now established and recognized as a reputable journal, and this has really come through in recent issues.
JDD: Do you feel that JDD has been beneficial in your practice and how so?
Dr. Hsiung: Yes, I enjoy seeing the comparison trials, side effects, and efficacy of the different treatments and combinations of treatments and articles that make me think if I need to change my practice. Dr. Robins and his editorial staff have the ability to think about what is most valuable to practicing dermatologists and that is what makes the difference.
JDD: Do you feel that the distribution of eJDD to 23,000 dermatologists around the world is a good initiative?
Dr. Hsiung:Absolutely, yes, because it helps the entire field. We are very lucky to have so much access to so much information in the United States and to have this information on best practices and best ways to approach and treat a patient disseminated around the world is a great thing.
JDD: Describe some of your favorite aspects of JDD, what stands out?
Dr. Hsiung: I love the special features in the JDD, for example the Resident Rounds. It is very interesting to see information about the different residency programs around the country. This gives us food for thought on how different aspects might be adopted into our own residency programs. Another example is the Pipeline Previews section, which helps us to know what valuable information is coming down the line and what we should be on the lookout for.
JDD: What would you like to see more of?
Dr.Hsiung:In general, I think everything is going in the right editorial direction. I particularly like the head-to-head trials comparing one medication to another so one can make an educated decision based on efficacy, side effect profiles, and other factors. I think we are all looking for ways to provide the best patient care, and the JDD helps us do that.
