Abstract
Resident Rounds is a section of the JDD dedicated to highlighting various dermatology departments with residency training programs. Resident Rounds includes three
sections: (1) a program spotlight, highlighting pertinent information about the department and residency training program; (2) a section presenting study materials used
by residents at the program; and (3) a section designed to highlight recent interesting cases seen at the institution. This issue of Resident Rounds features Wright State
University Department of Dermatology Residency Training Program . The editor of Resident Rounds is Omar A. Ibrahimi MD PhD. He is currently the Founding and Medical
Director of the Connecticut Skin Institute. Dr. Ibrahimi is also a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dermatology Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General
Hospital/Harvard Medical School. If you are interested in highlighting your training program in a future issue, please contact Dr. Ibrahimi at OIbrahimi@jddonline.com.
The Wright State University Department of Dermatology
is located in Dayton, OH, and has a rich history of training
residents since 1977. The department is composed
of four core academic faculty members in clinical dermatology.
One full-time dermatopathologist with a background in soft-tissue
pathology joined the department in 2012. Our residency program
consists of 6 residents with 2 residents per each class year.
The resident rotation schedule incorporates balanced exposure
to medical dermatology, inpatient dermatology, surgery,
pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, and cosmetic dermatology
in a stimulating and collegial environment where
residents have excellent autonomy and a large patient volume.
The modern, state-of-the art training facilities include the Dayton
VA Medical Center, the Wright State Physician’s Medical
Office Building on the university campus, and inpatient consult
services at two major community hospitals.
We serve a broad patient population that presents with many
uncommon dermatologic conditions. The department is a referral
center for complex medical dermatology, including rare
pigmentary disorders seen by a very distinguished faculty
member. The chair is the only board-certified pediatric dermatologist
serving the greater Dayton area.
Residents work with other talented volunteer faculty at private
offices in the community. These include: four fellowship-trained
dermatopathologists at a private dermatopathology
lab, three fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeons, and two cosmetic
dermatologists. Starting August 2013, the two chief residents
will operate a monthly, resident-run cosmetic clinic, and perform
a variety of cosmetic procedures.
The didactic schedule includes daily morning academic sessions,
faculty and resident lectures, journal clubs, kodachrome
sessions, monthly Grand Rounds, and board review sessions.
There also is a comprehensive visiting lecturer program that attracts outstanding faculty speakers from institutions throughout
the country to provide additional teaching opportunities for
our residents.
Graduates of the residency program have started and joined
successful private practices, joined academic programs and
pursued advanced training in dermatopathology and procedural
dermatology. WSU dermatology graduates are currently
practicing successfully in virtually all areas of the country and
are active leaders in multiple dermatologic organizations.
We take great pride in the success of our program, and anticipate
many new exciting changes in the future.
