Treating Keloids: Can energy-based devices make a difference? This article in JDD digs deeper. Keloids, thickened scars that extend beyond the original wound, are a common concern for individuals with skin of color. Energy-based devices (EBDs), both as monotherapy and in combination with drugs, are showing promise in keloid treatment. While lasers alone are effective, combining them with steroids, 5-FU, or verapamil has led to even better results. However, fewer side effects have been seen with laser monotherapy. Tailoring treatment to the patient is key, and more research is needed to establish comprehensive guidelines.
