JDD’s recent article “Genomic Analysis Aids in the Management of Dermoscopically Atypical Pigmented Lesions  evaluated whether dermoscopic features alone can reliably distinguish early melanoma in situ (MIS) from atypical nevi (ATN). Researchers assessed 56 melanomas over five years, focusing on clinical, dermoscopic features, and non-invasive genomic biomarkers (LINC00518 and PRAME). The findings showed that dermoscopic features like diminished pigment network, regression structures, and granularity were common but did not definitively separate MIS from ATN. Genomic testing proved valuable in patient management, aiding clinicians in distinguishing between higher and lower-risk lesions, especially in cases where multiple biopsies were considered.
