Program Spotlight: University of Florida Dermatology Residency Program, Gainesville, FL

to participate in several research projects during the course of their training. Over the last 2 years, 2 fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons and 2 board certi ed pediatric dermatologists have joined the department. Cosmetic services have blossomed and our laser armamentarium has grown to include the Palomar Icon, Candela Alex TriVantage, Candela GentleYag, Palomar Vectus Diode, Candela CO2RE, and VBeam Perfecta. The department has also expanded its territory to a clinical site in Jacksonville, Florida, which opened in 2014 with 2 faculty members. Residents rotate at this site weekly, which gives them a chance to serve a different patient demographic in Northeast Florida. Rotations at the Malcom Randall VA also al- low residents the unique opportunity to care for the myriad of veterans’ dermatologic needs. The program plans to further its growth over the next 3 to 4 years, and establish a Mohs micrographic surgery and der- matologic oncology fellowship and pediatric dermatology fellowship by 2020. We are also actively recruiting new faculty to continue expanding our basic and clinical science research. As we embark upon this 2016 to 2017 academic year, we can use the foundations upon which this department was built to continue improving patient care through research, passion, and integrity. The University of Florida Department of Dermatology takes pride in being a family striving for excellence. Since the pro- gram received its rst residents in 1992, every resident who has sat for the American Board of Dermatology exam has passed. The program has also been successful in maintaining ACGME accreditation since its establishment. The department also believes in giving back by providing care to disadvantaged individuals and families who would not otherwise receive care, through active collaboration for over 20 years with the Alachua County Outreach Rural Network (ACORN) Clinic. Furthermore, the department works with the University of Florida College of Medicine to provide dermatology education to medical students. Dr. Wesson, the current Residency Program Director, and other faculty members have also provided mentorship and guidance for numerous students in their efforts to obtain a residency position in the field. The majority of students who have taken advantage of these mentorship opportunities have matched into dermatology. Additionally, from 2008 to 2013, each graduating class has had one resident remain within the department as a junior faculty member in order to cultivate their interests be- fore transitioning to careers outside of academic dermatology. The University of Florida Department of Dermatology has a rich history and is comprised of compassionate and driven individuals who strive for excellence as an interdisciplinary team in all aspects of dermatology.
