Dr. Wheeland has been named one of the country's "Best Doctors" annually since 1992; and has received presidential citations from the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, as well as numerous awards. His research has led to an improved understanding of how lasers interact with the skin and how best to use those devices; and he has also performed numerous clinical research projects that have improved the care of patients with chronic wounds, various vascular conditions, skin cancer, and excess hair. These activities have led to over 230 publications, including 8 textbooks; and he has also served as an editor on many publications, chaired 3 university dermatology departments, and directed the surgical training of residents at the University of Missouri. He was also president of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the ASLMS, and the Pacific Dermatology Association; and he has mentored countless dermatology students.more >
Founded over 35 years ago, Genentech is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines to treat patients with serious or life-threatening medical conditions. The company, a member of the Roche Group, has been studying new treatments for skin cancer for nearly 20 years, and in the last 5 years has brought 3 new medicines to people with potentially disfiguring or deadly advanced skin cancers, or burdensome skin conditions. Genentech also works with the healthcare professional and patient community to ensure the latest information about its medicines and the diseases they treat are available to the people who need them. Allergan is a diversified global pharmaceutical company anchored by strong and sustainable brand franchises, a leading global generics business, and a premier pipeline. As well as its recent FDA approval for Juvederm Ultra XC for use in lips, Allergan has also recently received FDA approval for Dalvance and Teflaro, both for acute bacterial skin infections. Allergan acquired Kythera Biopharmaceuticals in October 2015, which is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel prescription products for the aesthetic medicine market. Dr. Lewallen completed her medical school training at Wake Forest University. For every year of her residency, she was voted Resident Teacher of the Year, and enjoys sharing her passion for dermatology with patients, students, and fellow residents. She has co-authored over 10 journal articles and is a recurring author of the Resident Journal Club Blog on www.the-dermatologist.com. She has also written 9 book chapters and is co-editor for a book on contact dermatitis. She is currently working on co-authoring a second book, Illustrated Clinical Cases: Dermatology, set for publication in 2017. She has presented at conferences both locally and nationally, including the American Academy of Dermatology. She enjoys volunteering at the local free clinic and community health fairs, serves on the resident quality improvement council, has completed a research internship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is a member of Women's Derm Foundation.more >
Recognizing outstanding leaders within the field of dermatology who have gone above and beyond by donating their time and services to improve patient outcomes, the 2016 JDD Humanitarian Award has been given to Dr. Waibel. This is mainly for her innovative work in using lasers to treat patients with traumatic burn injuries. Dr. Waibel recently received national news coverage for using the latest advancements in lasers to help heal the scars of Kim Phuc, now 52. As a child, Ms. Phuc was severely burned by napalm during the Vietnam War, an experience that was captured in an iconic photo. Medical Director and Owner of the Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute in Miami, one of Dr. Waibel’s primary passions is the treatment of scars by applying today’s latest cutaneous laser technologies. She has successfully developed industry-leading procedures and techniques with lasers, received numerous awards for her contributions to medicine, and published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and several textbook chapters. She was named “Person of the Week” on ABC World News Tonight, and was recently granted a Cutting Edge Research Grant by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.more >
Dr. Coldiron is a distinguished Moh's surgeon who has been president of both the American College of Mohs Surgery and the American Academy of Dermatology. Internationally known and frequently cited in literature and media, he has published over 63 peer-reviewed articles and 4 book chapters. While at medical school at the University of Kentucky he won the Lange book award for outstanding achievement, and was chairman of the president's council and class president. He is currently in private practice but maintains a clinical associate professorship at the University of Cincinnati; and his present research interests are patient safety and the epidemiology of skin cancer.more >
