JDD 2008 Case Report Contest
Submission deadline: October 31th, 2008
ELIGIBILITY: Any dermatologist or individual enrolled in a dermatology residency program at the time of the case report contest deadline.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: The submission must be a previously unpublished patient case or case study report relevant to the field of dermatology. The submission should not exceed 2000 words, and must follow the guidelines outlined in the JDD Instructions to Authors. Please also include “Case Report Contest” in the subject line of electronic submissions or indicate in the submission cover letter. All submissions must be received by the contest deadline to be considered eligible.
Elements of a good case report:
- Title that clearly identifies the presented case or case study
- Case history and presenting clinical situation
- Investigative path to differential diagnosis(es) and rationale
- Review of treatment options
- Clinical outcome of treatment
- Review of relevant literature
- Unique features of the patient case or case study
- Implications for clinical practice and teaching points
- Scientific observations or hypotheses
- Innovative or prismatic insight into a common dermatological problem
EVALUATION CRITERIA: Each submission will be evaluated according to clinical significance, originality, thoroughness of the relevant literature review, writing quality, and organization.
Case reports will be judged based on the following criteria:
- Rarity of condition
- Novel treatment regimen
- Newsworthy subject matter
- Unreported or unusual side effects or adverse interactions involving medications
- Unexpected or unusual presentations of a disease
- New associations or variations in disease processes
- Presentations, diagnoses and/or management of new and emerging diseases
- An unexpected association between diseases or symptoms
- An unexpected event in the course of observing or treating a patient
- Findings that shed new light on the possible pathogenesis of a disease or an adverse effect
PRIZES: Submissions will be evaluated by select members of the JDD Editorial Board and editorial staff. The top 3 case reports will be selected and these finalists will be notified by November 30, 2008. First, second and third prize winners will be determined and published in the January 2009 issue of the JDD, highlighted on the JDDonline.com website, and profiles of the winners and their winning case reports will be featured at the Orlando Aesthetic and Clinical conference, January 16-19, 2009.
