Abstract

Resident Rounds is a section of the JDD dedicated to highlighting various dermatology departments with residency training programs. Resident Rounds includes three sections: (1) a program spotlight highlighting pertinent information about the department and residency training program; (2) a section presenting study materials used by residents at the program; and (3) a section designed to highlight recent interesting cases seen at the institution. This issue of Resident Rounds features the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology. The editor of Resident Rounds is Dr. Ali Alikhan. Established in 1977, the Department of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins, led by Sewon Kang, chairman and program director, currently trains 17 residents in our ACGME- accredited program. In addition to the residency program, fellowships are offered in dermatopathology, Mohs surgery, pediatric dermatology, and in ethnic skin, the nation’s only such fellowship. Our program includes 17 full-time dermatology faculty, 15 part-time faculty, 3 dermatopathologists, 2 oral pathologists, and specialists in immunopathology.

Johns Hopkins Hospital is a historic institution that holds strong relationships locally, nationally, and internationally thus creating an ideal patient population that residents are exposed to throughout their training. Residents rotate through several general dermatology and surgery clinics as well as specialty clinics including melanoma, transplant, immunobullous disease, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. In our resident continuity clinics, we build upon our skills of developing effective patient relationships and providing quality patient care.

We are offered a unique opportunity to learn in a training program modeled after the Johns Hopkins core values: excellence and discovery, leadership and integrity, diversity and inclusion, respect and collegiality. This environment is conducive to developing great diagnosticians and clinicians as well as leaders in academia, research, and community service.

Aligned with the core value of excellence and discovery, all residents are involved in research with the support of the Cutaneous Translational Research Program. During the second and third years of training, a half-day every week is allocated for pursuing scholarly activities in a wide range of research interests that have led to numerous publications, research grants and presentations. For those interested in a career in investigative dermatology, a separate 4-year clinical and translational research track is offered allowing for more in-depth involvement in sponsored and investigator-initiated studies.

Residents fortify the knowledge gained in clinics in weekly faculty- led didactics, textbook reviews, pathology slide reviews, journal clubs, and self-assessment tests. Additionally, the department hosts bimonthly grand rounds as well as larger collaborative conferences with local dermatological societies in Maryland to discuss the management of challenging cases. We also interdigitate into our grand rounds a robust visiting professor program through which internationally recognized thought-leaders spend a couple of days in the department almost every other month.

The Department of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins has grown substantially in recent years, allowing us to improve patient access locally and across the region. As our influence expands, we look forward to educating the future role models and leaders in the field of dermatology.
